Black Women Yoga Retreats is an intensive spiritual yoga retreat dedicated to black women who are passionate about their love of yoga. It is a space where black women can grow, practice and learn yoga and meditation in a community environment and safe space. It is a space located outside of the United States, in the middle of nature, so that Black women may be able to connect with their minds, bodies and spirits through their yoga and meditation practices. For many around the world, Yoga is an ancient healing practice that connects us with mind, body and spirit. Yoga is a calling that goes beyond our physical; when we answer, we wake up to our higher selves. Black Women’s Yoga Retreats will provide a safe space for cooperative healing of our bodies, minds, and spirits through the revolutionary practice of self enlightenment. Black Women Yoga Retreats, WOCHR is a space for all black women who practice, whether this is the beginning of your journey or you have been practicing for years. We honor you and we welcome you.
Black Women Yoga Retreats Include:
De-Colonizing Yoga: Daily morning, afternoon, and evening yoga classes (2-3 daily yoga classes) Our classes are a variety of hatha, led ashtanga flow, vinyasa and more.
Women's workshops/ Women's Circle: There will be women’s workshops throughout the retreat. Your retreat includes 3 intensive workshops. The following list is a sample of some of those workshops.
Guided Meditations & Pranayama (breathing techniques): With a group of like minded and melanated yoginis, you will explore self enlightenment, freedom and inner peace. Our meditations are there to guide you to a higher level of consciousness that promotes a spirit filled with vitality. We want you to vibrate higher into a space of peacefulness that is motivated by the calmness of the true treasure of yoga: pranayama. By entering into a daily meditative practice, we hope to guide each other away from the myopic shackles of a modern racist society and into the peacefulness of spiritual knowledge.
Exploring the Yamas and/or Niyamas: When we connect with yoga we connect with our higher selves. Yoga is a practice that can not only heal our body's but our minds and spirits. The Yamas and Niyamas of yoga are ways that we interact with our selves and our world. In this workshop yoginis will break down different definitions and keys to each Yama and Niyama to create healthier lives on and off the mat.
Bhakti Workshop: Infuse asana, devotional chanting, and meditation as we explore and open the heart chakra.
Deepen your connection to the practice and spirit of life through the heart-opening qualities of Bhakti with the sensuality and flow of gentle back bends. Class will begin with pranayama and organic movement to clear the energy and invoke a sense of collectivity in the space. The women will join together in a circle, hand in hand, to begin the Bhakti chant ‘Om Mani Padme Hum’ which translates to “The Jewel Is Within the Lotus.”
The mantra will be recited 'call-and-chant style,' so that the group may feel comfortable with the repetition during the song portion.
Each and every one of us, as sistars, has a higher purpose. Through connection to one another on the journey of cultivating more love, we begin to send a higher vibration out into the universe through song. The ultimate goal is to immerse ourselves in the mantra, and tap into the healing power of connection through our beating hearts. There will be a group share to follow the chanting, and the women are encouraged to bring their journals to jot down any thoughts that came about during the song portion. After sharing, the women will be led through a series of asanas to open the heart chakra. There will be a guided meditation to integrate the energies and close the communion.
Moon Cycle Healing Workshop: For many women practicing while on their moon cycle can be a difficult time. Participants will go home with a sequenced tailored to women on their moon cycle.
Kirtan will also take place during the retreat.
Feel free to bring a neti pot and/or a tongue cleaner if you have one.

Throughout the retreat you will keep a yogic vegan diet that is gentle for the intestines and purifies the body.
Daily Breakfast: Vegan Breakfast. Healing vegan meals made with local quality and organic fruits and vegetables will be provided. We developed these meals for anyone who is currently a vegan and for those interested in exploring a vegan lifestyle.
Daily Lunch: Healthy and balanced Vegan lunches. Delicious meals prepared to elevate and fuel your practice.
Daily Dinner : Fill your belly with delicious vegan and holistic meals to nurture the mind, body, and spirit with our delicious group dinners.
Most of all of our delicious vegan meals are cooked, we provide raw/fruitarian options, if requested.

Coffee/Cacao Bathing at the Beach: Enjoy a coffee scrub by the beach where the natural blend will detoxify exfoliate and improve the blood circulation in your beautiful skin. Cacao is chocolate before it is pressed which is incredibly healing. This holistic healing and meditative experience brings us back to ourselves and to nature.
Additional Meditative and Restorative Services at Black Women's Yoga Retreat (at an additional cost): Black Women’s Yoga Retreat will have a Massage Therapist to provide Deep Tissue, Aromatherapy Massage, Holistic Massages and more. Massages not only reduce stress, pain and muscle tension, they also release energy blocks we may have. We will provide our yoginis with incredibly meditative and restorative massages.
Individual Guidance: We also provide private classes where an instructor can focus on your practice and together you can create a personal flow that works anywhere you are. Our ultimate goal is to nurture a bond between you and your yoga practice that can be relied on to keep you healthy, grounded, and enlightened no matter where you are.
We encourage relaxation: In your free time, you can read a book in a hammock, form a yoga philosophy circle with your sistars, meditate on the beach. We want you to connect with your highest self at all times and throughout the retreat.
The philosophy of yoga is said to date back to ancient times and was developed by Indian sages to cure disease, old age, pain and depression. Indian people did in fact come from African people, so many consider yoga to be an African tradition. According to the principles of yoga, the goal of life is “to achieve, while still alive, a state free from death, pain, sorrow, old age, disease and rebirth.” Instead of solely using medication to treat the symptoms of dis-ease as is typically done in the western philosophy of medicine, yoga aims to remove the root cause of the disease by returning the patient to a "natural state of living". This “natural state of living” includes a vegan diet, the practice of relaxation, and breath.
BWYR, WOCHR is a vegan retreat, all meals are cooked with quality ingredients. Animal by products are not allowed within the retreat space , no exceptions. As we abstain from animal by products in the BWYR kitchen, we also abstain from alcohol throughout the retreat. This abstinence will be in effect whether guests are in the retreat lodge, or are enjoying some well needed personal time. Our goal for the alcohol cleanse, is to keep the vibrations high. This is a space dedicated to assisting black women on their yoga journeys. We are each responsible for ourselves. We are responsible for showing up each day. In personal responsibility it is your duty to make sure you use this space to go within while building community with your sistars. It is in the spirit of sisterhood that all guests may participate in a Silent Dinner. Silent Dinner requires tuning into our own inner voices. We will revere in the power of silent meditation and its ability to bring gratitude to our lives.
Black Women Yoga Retreat is all about developing a relationship with one's yoga and meditation practice. For many, yoga is known to solely be a physical practice, but yoga goes beyond the physical. Yoga is the connection of the mind, body and spirit. Yoga classes incorporate spirituality, anatomy, pranayama, and additional aspects of yoga. Classes are taught in English and Sanskrit. Our intensive yoga retreat features workshops that encourage women to deepen their yoga practice. Participants should have at least 6 months of consistently practicing yoga before attending. This is a meditative retreat where participants are able to have quiet time. Adventure activities do not take place throughout the Black Women Yoga Retreat as the entire time within the retreat is dedicated to the practice of yoga. During the yoga retreat, there is plenty of leisure time in-between classes for participants to visit the beach or take some well-deserved personal time.
Centuries of yogic research has concluded that yoga prescribes derived from stretching, relaxation, deep breathing, and increasing circulation and concentration. By learning to control the body, we can easily train the mind, and it is after one learns how to concentrate the mind, that one discovers all of its hidden facets and awakens the inner spirituality.
