Why Women Of Color Healing Retreats?
WOCHR is the the #1 retreat for us, by us with programming dedicated to people of color, particularly the Black woman. WOCHR is also the 1st retreat completely for us, by us.
WOCHR is in a private retreat location, making this a true jungle escape. Every single person on the retreat team staff are people of color and dedicated in their own rights to the ideal of community care. When you attend a WOCHR or any of our retreats/events, be confident in the knowledge that you are truly supporting black communities through and through. When most people travel to other countries they usually are not in an environment with people who mirror them. Women of all shades, from all walks of life attend our retreats to practice healing themselves and each other. We also believe that the youth must remain a priority, so we have also created free wellness programs for kids of color. We believe in our efforts to support, heal and love one another. We are so elated to have you join us in Costa Rica !

Do I have to be vegan to attend this retreat, do you have any recommendations on exploring veganism throughout the retreat?
You do not need to be vegan to attend the retreat! This is a space to try something new or to continue your self care journey. Some of our participants have never tried being plant-based and we love having people experience this way of healthier eating with us. 1-2 weeks prior to your arrival, we recommending experimenting with veganism, by implementing all or more plant-based meals into your every day life. We recognize that meat and dairy are the leading causes of disease within black communities so we want to encourage a plant-based lifestyle. We hold space for people in all walks on their journey to explore veganism. ”Eating plant-based helps cleanse the physical body of impurities accumulated from poor dietary habits. It also reduces stimulation to the digestive organs and liberates energy. A feeling of lightness affects the mind; this improves concentration and aids meditation. We each know that when we have eaten a heavy meal it becomes harder to concentrate. During this week you will detox from alcohol, eating dead food (processed and synthetic), eating dead animals, eating too much or too little, chemicals in food and prolonged exposure to air pollution. A period of fasting from these things facilitates the body in throwing off toxins, and frees up energy". Our plant-based meals are absolutely delicious, we also can provide raw and fruitarian selections upon request. Animal by products will not be allowed, no exceptions this includes leathers, skins,..etc.
Do you provide childcare?
We do not provide child care. We do, however, hold space for kids in our Free Kids of Color Program.
What is holistic self-care? A holistic wellness lifestyle is one that aims to achieve an inner balance of mind, body and spirit, using natural healing methods such as yoga, meditation, unlearning, plant-based living, nature & self-reflection. "Holistic self-care is possessing enough self awareness to correct the behavior of over-functioning for others while under functioning for yourself."

What about my hair, I know that we will have the chance to go to the ocean, what should I do ?
We understand this question as black hair is so sacred and important! If you are natural, then we recommend wearing your hair natural. There is an abundance of coconut oils, etc here in Costa Rica. If you are not natural (meaning you have a perm, weave, etc) then we do recommend getting braids as this is a retreat where we get our hair wet and connect back with nature and ourselves! Please note: Box braids can get in the way with yoga, whether this is your first time practicing or you have practiced for years, we want you to experience the full practice so we do not recommend specifically box braids. We honor the roots of our blackness so we would love to have you in all of your natural hair glory!
How much spending money should I bring?
We recommend bringing $350 or more for spending. Snacks will be sold daily, you may also want to purchase souvenirs in Costa Rica.

Participants can take $5-10 taxis, or they can choose to rent 4 wheelers!

Is there a difference between the WOCHR and The Black Women Yoga Retreat?
Yes! The Black Women Yoga Retreat is dedicated to the practice of yoga. It is an intensive spiritual yoga retreat where participants dive deeper into their yoga and meditation practice. This retreat is open for all but we do recommend you have some prior yoga experience. The yoga retreat is an intensive spiritual yoga retreat that has 2-3 quality yoga classes a day allowing participants to explore different kinds of yoga, while the WOCHR has 1 yoga class a day. WOCHR is a longer program featuring dynamic workshops that address, blackness, spirituality, wellness and yoga.
How many women attend the WOCHR?
Our WOCHR holds space for 12 women max at a time and our yoga retreat holds space for 25 women max at a time. A large group of people at a retreat can be exhausting and overwhelming and it can be hard to focus, so we have cultivated a perfect range. Both providing you with authentic self-care.
