Greetings,
My name is Satya and 5 years ago I left New York City to experience Central America. Though I enjoyed the big Apple’s blistering pace, I was drained by racist ideology hovering over US culture, and I wanted a different experience. I had a magical experience traveling around Panama, Mexico, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. While in Costa Rica, I volunteered at a majestic butterfly garden and consequently traded in my heels for sandals only to find that I was happier barefoot. I climbed mountains and rode my bike under the stars. I meditated more than I ever had in my entire life, and it was here in Costa Rica where my spiritual journey uncontrollably blossomed. I learned a different way of living, a more holistic and organic way of seeing the world. I learned that our lives are really our own and we can create any beauty we want. I love the energy of Costa Rica. It has become my home. When I was in the United States, I would always say to myself “I’m leaving the country for a while at some point.” I had not realized that those thoughts would later manifest into my future.
It was also here in Costa Rica where I continued the understanding that Black people are truly the most oppressed people worldwide. I was able to see it, firsthand, while living and traveling to so many different countries. I realized that there was this pattern of constantly seeing black people repeat the same narrative and role worldwide, which led me to realize that systemic racism was larger than what we knew. I also came to the understanding that the entire world needed more heart centered consciousness. The most important part was that I not only allowed Costa Rica to change my entire life, but that it was now vital for me to share the experience of being outside of the United States, back in nature with other people of color, eating holistically, healing with the spiritual practice of yoga & meditation, connecting with the elements and each other. It was vital to create a sanctuary where Black women could experience peace, tranquility, wellness and nature.
I created Women of Color Healing Retreats out of the desire to connect Black Americans to nature and themselves. The retreat’s goal is to bring women together for self-healing & wellness in the gorgeous jungles of Costa Rica. During the retreats the women practice yoga , go hiking on waterfalls, swim in the bluest oceans, meditate amongst themselves and each other. Through group discussions , the women also explore self-love, spirituality, the healing benefits of yoga + meditation and they are supported in a sacred setting to discuss the ways systemic racism affects them in their lives. All of the holistic and metaphysical tools used throughout the retreat have been scientifically proven to heal. The retreat is a sacred sanctuary that allows women of color to get back to nature through hiking and zip lining across the beautiful jungles of Costa Rica. It also a space to unwind and disconnect from the psychological trauma of systemic racism. This retreat is a custom designed for women of color. If you are afraid of traveling alone, this is the perfect opportunity to begin your travel story because of the support you will receive from your traveling sisters and WOCHR. This is a sanctuary for women to understand the true essence and vitality of wellness and healing and we honor and welcome you!
Love,
Satya
